With its sunny weather and laid-back pace of life, it’s no surprise that many Europeans set their sights on a dream home in Cyprus. This is, after all, an island where you can follow up a long week of work with a sunny day at the beach! If you are looking ahead to a dream life living in Cyprus, there are a few steps you’ll need to tackle on the way to getting a Cyprus permanent residence.

Looking to start a new life in Cyprus? Check out our guide to get your Cyprus lifestyle up and running.

Find if you are eligible

Before you can start getting excited about your dream life in Cyprus, you first have to make sure that you are eligible! To gain permanent residence in Cyprus, you will need to prove that you are 18 years of age or older, as well as giving proof of your identity and nationality. You will also need to prove that you have lived in Cyprus for 5 years, and that you have a clean criminal record.

Get your documents together

When it comes time to apply for permanent residency, being prepared is key. You won’t want to be left scrambling for a document that you can’t place during the application process. Here is everything that you’ll need to complete your application:

  • Passport or national identity card
  • Birth certificate
  • Evidence of employment or self-employment
  • Evidence of investment (if applicable)
  • Evidence of family relationship (if applicable)
  • Criminal record certificate from your home country
  • Medical certificate

Submit your application

With everything in place, it’s time to send off your application. To apply for permanent residence in Cyprus, you’ll need to submit your application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department. If it’s more convenient for you, you also have the option of submitting your application through the department website. You can also go for the fast-track option, which involves investing in Cyprus with a property worth €300,000.

Wait for a decision

Once you’ve fired off your application, the waiting game begins. To reach a decision, The Civil Registry and Migration Department will assess all of the documents you sent and your reasons for applying for permanent residency. Wondering how long it takes for your application to be assessed? Be patient – your permanent residency application could take anywhere from 4-8 months to be approved.

Keep renewing

Your application might get approved, but ensuring you have permanent residence doesn’t end here. You’ll need to make sure your permanent residence is renewed every five years! Luckily, renewing your application is a lot less complicated than making the initial application. Again, you’ll need to send your renewal application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department. Here, you’ll just need to provide proof that you have continued to meet the eligibility requirements for permanent residence, for example with your employment and investment in Cyprus.
